A normal Sunday morning in November 1996 turned into a life-altering tragedy for one Oklahoma family—but through loss came a legacy of hope that continues to impact lives decades later.
As LifeShare Oklahoma marks its 40th anniversary of saving lives and inspiring hope through organ, eye and tissue donation, the organization shares the story of Amanda Philpott and her family—a powerful reminder that one selfless decision can create a lasting legacy and change countless lives. The story comes as LifeShare recognizes April as Donate Life Month, celebrating with the theme “Making Life’s Milestones Possible.”
On Nov. 24, 1996, Cheryl and Dan Manley were preparing for church and the Thanksgiving holiday with their family when a car accident changed their lives forever. Their daughter Amanda sustained a brain injury, and their daughter, Alisa, was seriously injured. Despite lifesaving efforts, Amanda was later declared brain dead.
Representatives from LifeShare approached Cheryl and Dan about the opportunity for organ and tissue donation. After careful consideration, they made the selfless decision to say yes—allowing Amanda to give the gift of life to others.
Soon after, the Manleys learned that Amanda’s heart had gone to someone close to home—a member of their own church community. The revelation brought comfort and a sense of purpose during an otherwise devastating time.
“Only God could write my story,” said Cheryl. “Amanda is with Him now, and through donation, her life continues in others. Don’t take your organs to heaven—heaven knows we need them here.”
Nearly 30 years later, the Manley family remains closely connected to LifeShare, turning their grief into advocacy. Cheryl and Dan now volunteer with the organization, sharing Amanda’s story to inspire others to register as donors. Cheryl’s journey of giving did not stop there—she became a living kidney donor in 2014, further extending her commitment to saving lives.
April is recognized nationwide as Donate Life Month, a time to honor donors and their families, celebrate transplant recipients and encourage individuals to register as organ, eye and tissue donors.
